Chapter Sixteen

After breakfast Rebecca set off for home, and Kate and Pat decided to set off for town. Pat went to the market downtown every Monday morning to look for fresh ingredients for her restaurant. Even though she wasn’t wild about facing the sunlight with a hangover, Kate didn’t have any real objection about going into town. The great thing about Hope was, she wasn’t famous here. She was just Kate. The bad thing about that was, Kate had left Gerry the night before their wedding, and no one was about to let her live it down.

She was nearly to the car when she realized the sun was so damn bright because she’d left her glasses inside the house.

When she walked back into the kitchen to retrieve her sunglasses, she caught Pat looking out the window.

“I thought you were ready to go. What are you looking at?” she asked.

The older woman jumped and started fanning with a kitchen towel, while concealing something in her apron.

“Nothing, nothing. Looks like we’ll be gettin’ a new neighbor,” she said conversationally.

“New neighbor, huh?”

Kate walked over to take a look.

No one was exactly close to Pat’s house. She held out her hand and Pat reluctantly handed her the binoculars she’d tried to conceal.

“Well, what do you think?” she said, no longer appearing concerned that she’d been caught spying.

A man who looked to be in his mid-fifties began to come into focus just beside a white picket fence. He was tall and muscular. He bent down to pet a small dog, and Kate noticed he also had a very nice smile. At this point, he turned around and she said, “Nice ass,” and handed the binoculars back to Pat.

“Not bad,” Pat conceded.

“So, you’ve been looking? You dirty old woman,” she teased.

“It’s only dirty if you’re after someone half your age.”

“If you say so.”

“I do.”

“If that helps you sleep at night,” Kate joked.

“Speaking of sleeping, how’s your back?”

“It hurts like hell, but I’ll live.”

“How’s the rest of you?” Pat asked, a bit more sympathetically.

“It hurts like hell, but I’ll live.”

“Good,” Pat said with a smile, “because we’ve got some shoppin’ to do.”

Kate’s sunglasses weren’t dark enough to keep the sun from hurting her eyes, and every beat of her heart seemed to be echoed in her head. She had come to the conclusion that tequila wasn’t a drink; it was the essence of some demon trapped in a bottle. Once they were in town, Pat parked at the end of Market Street and motioned for her to follow. Kate knew what was coming. She’d shopped with Pat often enough when she was little. Sure, she liked to get all of the freshest ingredients for her restaurant, but the main reason she personally came to the market instead of sending someone else was so she could gossip.

Kate climbed wearily from the passenger side of Pat’s red SUV and fell into step behind her. First they came to the grocer who always had a display of fresh fruits and vegetables outside his door.
